Orthography: Learning Spellings

Orthography refers to all aspects of the writing system including:

  • spelling
  • punctuation
  • spacing
  • special features
  • boldface
  • italics

Researchers contend that the best to learn about spelling is as a scientist or detective.  Rather than giving students a list of words to memorize, teachers can lead students in investigating words.  They can pose questions like, "How does a word change when an e is added to the end of it?"  Students can then gather words without e on the end and words with e on the end and compare them to figure out how this spelling rule usually works.

Here are some websites for practicing sorting words according to their sounds or spelling rules.  Click each title to follow the link.
