Modifying Lessons for ELLs

Here are some general steps you can follow in order to modify a lesson for ELLs.  This process can ensure that students are improving in both content knowledge and language abilities simultaneously.

1. Study student's current language abilities using ACCESS scores.

2. Compare abilities to performance definitions and model performance indicators for their language level in the 2012 Amplified Standards.

3. Create a performance definitions chart for your own lesson following the model on p. 25 of the amplified standards. This chart helps you to brainstorm language students need to process and produce in the areas of linguistic complexity, language forms and conventions, and vocabulary.

4. Use the info above to create language objectives for your lesson plan. Think of all 4 language domains: listening, reading, speaking, and writing, even if you don't end up including them all in this lesson.

5. Create content objectives.

6. Consider the student's home language and culture. Consider ways you can include connections to the home language/culture in your lesson.

7. Think about technology. How can technology be incorporated in meaningful ways in this lesson.
